Matt Done helped to inflict more misery on Crewe as Rochdale eased to a 3-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory.
Keith Hill's men had coasted to a 5-2 win at Gresty Road in a League One clash a fortnight ago and they threatened a repeat scoreline on their return as Crewe's porous defence, which has conceded 19 times already this season, was often on the rack. Scott Shearer did well to win a one-on-one with Done when he broke free on goal, but Done was not to be denied and added to the hat-trick he collected in the earlier fixture with a fine header to put Dale ahead three minutes before the break. Joseph Rafferty pulled the ball back at the far post and Done rose to pick his spot from six yards. Billy Waters went close for Crewe with a snapshot which was tipped over by Conrad Logan shortly after the restart. But the teenager skied over with the goal at his mercy when Anthony Grant's low drive came back off the post. And Rochdale turned the screw with Peter Vincenti's looping header finding the top corner from Jamie Allen's corner in the 64th minute. A mix-up between Adam Dugdale and Jon Guthrie let in substitute Calvin Andrew who drove into an empty net for Dale's third three minutes from time.Rochdale ease to Crewe win
