Swansea defender Alfie Mawson underwent successful knee surgery on Monday and will not be going to the World Cup with England.
Mawson spoke to England boss Gareth Southgate beforehand, and he indicated the centre-back was unlikely to be selected for the squad travelling to Russia.
The decision was taken to undergo the operation as soon as possible, therefore, to put Mawson in the best shape for the start of next season.
Mawson is expected to be out for between six weeks and two months, and his Swansea future is in doubt following relegation from the Premier League.
A number of Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in the 24-year-old ahead of the transfer window, which opens on Thursday.
West Ham showed interest in Mawson in the January transfer window but were unable to strike a deal as the Swans battled to stay up.
The former Brentford academy player joined Swansea from Barnsley in 2013 and is a former England U21 international.
