Coventry 1-0 Plymouth: Amadou Bakayoko hits winner from the spot

Coventry 1-0 Plymouth

Coventry edged out ten-man Plymouth 1-0 to claim their first League One win of the season.

In a match with few clear-cut chances, Amadou Bakayoko's 42nd minute penalty proved the difference between the sides.

The big striker's first goal in sky blue came when referee Darren Drysdale adjudged Jordy Hiwula to have been tripped as he cut into the box from the left.

Plymouth's misery was completed by a 58th minute red card for Jamie Ness.

The penalty came in an otherwise forgettable opening 45 minutes with little by way of goalmouth action at either end.

Coventry went closest to breaking the deadlock through Tony Andreu's low shot which Matt Macey blocked at his near post.

Former Coventry favourite Ruben Lameiras then forced home keeper Liam O'Brien into a fine low save just minutes after arriving as a half-time substitute.

But Plymouth's hopes of an equaliser were dented when Ness collected a second yellow card for handball.

And it was Coventry who went closest to finding another goal through two Tom Bayliss efforts before Jordan Shipley failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity.
