Roy Hodgson admitted there is 'a lot to put right' at Crystal Palace, but is confident they will improve as the season progresses.
Palace are still yet to score in the Premier League and are bottom on zero points after a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.
The Eagles will be looking to avoid an eighth straight defeat after the international break when they host Chelsea and Hodgson, who took over a fortnight ago, is backing his side to improve.
"I am confident we will become a better team and will cause more problems for teams and defensively we will get stronger and make it harder for teams to score against us," he told Sky Sports.
"We will also be playing against teams with a similar squad and amount of money spent on recruitment. At the moment we are playing the cream of the Premier League and when you make a mistake the people with the chance tuck it away.
"Of course we are concerned but you don't get relegated in September or October."
Palace were without several first-team players for their trip to Old Trafford including Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
"They were moments in the game where I could take a lot of encouragement," said Hodgson. "If we can take some of the things from this game which were not too bad in my opinion then who knows, we can possibly build on them.
"We are like a boxer being knocked down by superior opponents but at least we are getting ourselves up off the canvas and going again and that in itself is something, and we have a fantastic bunch of fans who back us up at all times."
But Hodgson added: "There is a lot we have to put right. There's a lot tactically, which is the job of me and my staff on the training field.
"When it comes to character and resilience we have to demand more in that respect but you are depending on your personnel and some players are more able to show that resilience and grafting than others.
"The message today was you have to be disappointed with the way we conceded the goals but on the other hand we didn't lay down and even towards the end we were asking a few questions.
"Unfortunately they found the questions relatively easy to answer."
