Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has hailed Graziano Pelle after the 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle.
The Italian striker scored a first-half brace to secure an impressive win over Alan Pardew’s side, with Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin completing the rout.
Following his side’s superb performance, Koeman believes that the former Feyenoord man was the standout player on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a perfect game for Graziano. Scoring twice gave confidence to the team, and now we know what he can bring,” Koeman told Sky Sports.
“He needs one or two weeks to adapt, because it’s not Holland - it’s different. But he played fantastically today.”
Despite the convincing win over the Magpies, Koeman insists there are still areas that his side can work on ahead of next weekend’s trip to Swansea.
"It wasn’t a perfect game because we made some mistakes in the first half,” said Koeman.
“We had a fantastic start and scored a fantastic first goal. We controlled it totally, and we played the last 10-15 minutes well.
“To score in the way Morgan did – it was a great finish. It was a great result and I’m proud of the team,” he added.
“We’ll enjoy this weekend and we’ll prepare ourselves for next weekend."
