Louis van Gaal turned to a popular English expression when asked for a response to recent criticism from ex-Manchester United star Paul Scholes.
Scholes had described United as "a team you wouldn't want to play against because they're tightly organised" but went on to say "it seems he [Van Gaal] doesn't want players to beat men and score goals - it's not a team I would have enjoyed playing in."
The comments were given short shrift by Van Gaal at his weekly news conference, as he turned to the old adage that "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" in his response.
