Carlos Alcaraz made it through to the quarter-finals at the Rolex Paris Masters without taking to the court after his scheduled opponent Matteo Berrettini withdrew from their third-round match.

The pair had been due to play on Thursday evening in the French capital but Berrettini has suffered another injury setback, pulling out due to pain in his arm.

Alcaraz, who is chasing his fifth tour-level trophy of the season in the French capital, will face home favourite Arthur Fils or Taylor Fritz in the last eight at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

The Spaniard will be bidding to reach the semi-finals on the indoor hard courts of Paris for the first time in six appearances.

An official social media announcement from the tournament read: "Matteo Berrettini has to withdraw from the Rolex Paris Masters. Wishing you a speedy recovery Matteo. Carlos Alcaraz is qualified for the quarter-finals."

Berrettini posted his statement of his own in Italian on Instagram stories, which translated as: "Hi all, unfortunately the pain in my arm that I've had for a few days won't allow me to take the court tonight.

"In the next few days I will have all the necessary tests to better understand what this is. Thank you all for the support and affection you show me every day on and off the court. Mat."

Fils, who will take on Fritz in the night session, became the first French player to qualify for the ATP Finals since Gael Monfils in 2016 earlier this week.

Fritz is currently 11th in the Race To Turin and still has a chance to qualify, although the American knows he must defeat both Fils and Alcaraz to reach the semi-finals to keep his hopes alive.

Alcaraz holds a 39-5 record for the season so far and has already qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin later this month having won four titles this year - Australian Open, Qatar Open, Japan Open and last week's Vienna Open.
