Hull consider taking Cooke to court over controversial switch

Hull FC could sue their former player Paul Cooke after he was found guilty of making an illegal approach to a club. The England international was banned by the Rugby Football League as punishment over his role in his controversial cross-city move to Hull KR last season. He has been suspended until March 17, ruling him out of the first six weeks of the new Super League season, while he was also ordered to pay the costs of the tribunal hearing. Cooke had claimed that he never signed a new three-year contract that had been negotiated with Hull and was therefore free to move, but his argument was rejected by the tribunal.

Vindicated

Hull chief executive James Rule said the ruling vindicated his club over the matter - and they are now considering whether to take civil action against their former player. "We are satisfied with the decision and we will now take time to consider our next steps in consultation with our legal advisers with regard to potential future civil action," he said. "We are in no rush to make that decision." Cooke has 14 days to lodge an appeal. Rule added: "I have to say the after-effects of Paul Cooke's departure were difficult for our players, coaches, staff and fans to take. "However, I am sure this decision will be very warmly received by them all. This is a sad day for Paul Cooke but the right decision for the integrity of the game."
