Clint Dempsey scored his 50th international goal to set the United States on their way to a 4-0 win over Costa Rica in Copa America Group A.

The US went down to a 2-0 defeat to Colombia in their opening game but rebounded in style at Soldier Field in Chicago on Tuesday as Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi were also on target.

Costa Rica should have gone ahead in the sixth minute when a poor clearance from DeAndre Yedlin dropped to Joel Campbell but he hooked his effort wide of the post.

And they were made to pay three minutes later when the US went ahead after a push on Wood from Cristian Gamboa and referee Roddy Zambrano immediately pointed to the spot. Dempsey kept his cool to confidently slot home and become the second American to score a half century of international goals.

Gyasi Zardes blasted an effort high and wide before the US doubled their advantage in the 37th minute. Dempsey did brilliantly to hold the ball up waiting for support to arrive and when it did in the shape of Jones, the midfielder fired home from 20 yards after a neat lay-off.

It got even better for the host nation four minutes late when Wood made it three after a superb ball from Michael Bradley picked him out and he turned a defender before firing low past Patrick Pemberton.

The States then put the icing on the cake four minutes from time when sloppy play from the Costa Rican defence gifted the ball to Chris Wondolowski, and Zusi ran in on goal to beat Pemberton for a fourth time.
