Tranmere beat promotion chasing Scunthorpe 2-0 thanks to goals from Edrissa Sonko and Ryan Shotton.

Scunthorpe slip to second reverse in four days

Goals from Edrissa Sonko and Ryan Shotton were enough to give Tranmere a 2-0 victory as promotion chasing Scunthorpe suffered a second reverse in four days. Tranmere created the better early chances but both Terry Gornell and Ryan Shotton missed the target from clear opportunities and a Gornell header was no trouble to Joe Murphy in the United goal. The breakthrough for the Merseysiders came in the 41st minute. Sonko latched onto a Bas Savage pass and neatly lobbed Murphy with the ball bouncing inside the right hand post. United struggled to carve out opportunities in the opening period, with blocked shots from Gary Hooper and David Mirfin their best efforts. The visitors made a determined start to the second half, but home keeper Danny Coyne managed to turn a close range shot by Sam Togwell over the bar after 48 minutes before tipping over a Hooper header from the subsequent corner. Shotton doubled Tranmere's lead after 75 minutes, scoring at the second attempt from an acute angle after his first effort rebounded off Matt Sparrow.
