Jamie Carragher is hoping to see new faces at Liverpool this summer and believes Champions League football will aid their recruitment.
Jurgen Klopp is pursuing Roma's Mo Salah and Sporting Lisbon's Gelson Martins, according to Sky sources, but the hunt for defensive reinforcements took a twist on Wednesday when the Reds said they had ended their interest in Southampton's Virgil van Dijk.
"You never know who the club are going to buy," Carragher, joining Jeff Stelling's March for Men charity walk for Prostate Cancer UK, told Sky Sports News HQ. "But I'm the same as any supporter this season, there's always that hope and optimism that you're going to get all the targets that you want.
"It never really happens but that's the same for any club. I'm sure at times you get number two or three on the list but that's football, and that's the way it goes.
"Hopefully for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, they get everyone that they want."
Liiverpool qualified for the Champions League with victory over Middlesbrough on the final day of last season but they still must navigate a play-off round in mid-August to reach the tournament proper.
The transfer window will be open for a further week following the second leg of that tie on August 22 or 23 and Carragher thinks some recruitment could hinge on their progress
"You want to be in all the top competitions; (Champions League qualification) was a big thing for Liverpool but they're still not there yet, they've still got a qualifying game," he said.
"We've just got to make sure we get in it and hopefully that will attract the players.
