Oxford have enquired about re-signing Marvin Johnson on loan from Middlesbrough, Sky Sports News understands.
The 27-year-old winger has been told he has no future under Tony Pulis at the Riverside.
Johnson, who joined Boro from the U's on Deadline Day in the last transfer window, can only play for two clubs in one season and made three appearances for Oxford last August.
Oxford are therefore the only other team Johnson can play for this term, and the managerless Yellows have been in the market for a new wide player this month.
Johnson was a fans favourite during his first spell at the Kassam Stadium, scoring seven goals in over 50 appearances at the League One club.
That was under Pep Clotet, however, and he was sacked by the club last week.
Oxford do not intend to let any players go before the transfer deadline either, with midfielder Ryan Ledson the subject of multiple rejected bids from Preston this month.
