Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has attacked the "embarrassing" motives behind the sting operation which led to Sam Allardyce losing his job as England manager.

Allardyce stepped down from his role with the national side after being secretly filmed discussing the possibility of avoiding the Football Association's rules on third-party ownership by undercover reporters working for the Daily Telegraph.

The former Sunderland and West Ham manager was also seen mocking his predecessor Roy Hodgson in the video released on Tuesday.

Allardyce's contract with the FA was terminated on Tuesday evening. Earlier in the day, Rodgers moved to defend the 61-year-old, who was appointed as manager of the national team less than three months ago.

"What a tactic that is," said Rodgers in reference to the undercover sting operation.

"The poor guy's going into a job. It's actually embarrassing to some among the profession but I've got nothing to say on it."

Sky sources understand that another eight top-level managers have been approached by the undercover journalists working for the Daily Telegraph.

Rodgers confirmed he is not one of those approached but refused to comment further on the matter.

"I heard it this morning on the way in but I've nothing to add to it," said Rodgers, who is preparing his Celtic side to face Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
