A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick ensured Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with 4-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after a spill by Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov but the home side lost Gareth Bale to injury just two minutes after that.

Taras Stepanenko was shown a second yellow card for the visitors five minutes after the interval before Ronaldo bagged two penalties.

The first should not have stood after Darijo Srna was penalised for handball when Ronaldo's effort clearly hit his back.

Ronaldo got his second from the spot after Marcio Azevedo was punished for a more clear-cut handball and was on hand to complete his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining when Marcelo's effort was palmed into the path of the Portuguese forward, who nodded into the net.

Elsewhere in Group A, Paris Saint-Germain started their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Malmo thanks to goals from Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani.

Wolfsburg and PSV share top spot in Group B after wins over CSKA Moscow and Manchester United, respectively.

There was to be no fairy tale Champions League debut for Astana as the Kazakh side lost 2-0 away to Benfica with second half goals coming from Nicolas Gaitan and Konstantinos Mitroglou.

Atletico Madrid share top spot in Group C after a 2-0 win in Turkey against Galatasaray. Antoine Griezmann scored twice in the first half to secure all three points for Diego Simeone's team.

Sevilla raced to the top of Group D thanks to a 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Kevin Gameiro opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Ever Banega added a second from 12 yards 20 minutes later. Yevhen Konoplyanka then made the scoreline more emphatic with six minutes remaining.

Juventus are second in Group D after coming from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad.
