PSV Eindhoven got their season off to the perfect start with a 2-1 victory over Utrecht.

Substitute Gaston Pereiro's late strike ensured Phillip Cocu's Eredivisie title defence got off to the best possible start after they came from behind on Saturday.

The champions conceded a Sebastien Haller headed effort in the 16th minute before Davy Propper levelled in the 51st.

Pereiro then fired in the winner direct from a free-kick with 10 minutes to go, having only been on the pitch for four minutes.

Ajax, who finished two points behind PSV in taking second place last term, open their 2016-17 campaign on Sunday with a trip to newly-promoted Sparta Rotterdam.

Another team to have come up from the Eerste Divisie, Go Ahead Eagles, were beaten 3-0 at Den Haag on Saturday, with Mike Havenaar netting a 16th-minute penalty and 70th-minute header before substitute Tyronne Ebuehi nodded in with eight minutes to go.

FC Twente were beaten 2-1 at home by Excelsior, Kevin Vermeulen and Leeroy Owusu putting the visitors 2-0 up before a late reply from Jari Oosterwijk.
