Bundesliga outfit in need of defensive cover after Friedrich blow

Eintracht Frankfurt defender Marco Russ has emerged as a transfer target for Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga outfit's pre-season plans have been dealt a blow with Germany international Arne Friedrich having suffered a back injury. The 32-year-old, who has made 82 international appearances, is set to be out for several weeks with a problem he picked up while with the Germany squad. Defensive reinforcements have now become a priority for Wolfsburg and they are thought to have offered around £3.2milllion for Russ. The 25-year-old, who has a year left on his contract, was a regular as his hometown club were relegated from the Bundesliga last season. Some reports claim Russ has already agreed a three-year contract with Wolfsburg but coach Felix Magath insists they are still weighing up their options. "We are considering the situation in our defence," he told Wolfsburger Nachrichten.

Surprise

"The injury to Arne Friedrich appeared like a surprise to us. He was still on international duty with Germany at the start of June and I was not given any information before he dropped out later on. "I just received a phone call from him last Monday. Obviously the situation is sort of risky. We are looking into a few options."
