Villarreal closed the gap back on the top four in La Liga with a 1-0 win at Celta Vigo on Sunday.
The Yellow Submarine moved back to within four points of Atletico Madrid, who won at Granada a day earlier, thanks to former Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado's strike on the stroke of half-time.
Celta Vigo were looking to climb back into the top 10 with a victory, while Villarreal are fifth.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Athletic Bilbao continued their push to qualify for next season's Europa League with a 2-0 win at Real Sociedad in a feisty encounter that saw nine players booked at the Estadio Anoeta.
Raul Garcia opened the scoring for the away side from the penalty spot after 28 minutes when Xabi Prieto was brought down in the box, and they doubled their lead four minutes before the hour when Inaki Williams found the back of the net.
