Sergio Aguero was taken off on a stretcher during Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Ecuador after injuring a hamstring.
The Manchester City striker, who scored five times against Newcastle last weekend, pulled up holding his left leg after 24 minutes of his country's 2-0 defeat in Buenos Aires.
City confirmed the injury in a statement on their website, saying Aguero "pulled up holding his left hamstring while chasing a long ball downfield."
Aguero, who has suffered several hamstring injuries during his time in the Premier League, will now have a scan to determine the severity of his latest problem.
The 27-year-old was replaced as a precaution at the weekend shortly after completing the fastest five-goal haul in the Premier League era, and he later admitted he had felt his hamstring in City's previous game against Borussia Monchengladbach.
But the latest problem is unrelated to that, according to Argentina boss Gerardo Martino.
He said: "He had been carrying a knock with his club, during the week we took good care of him. He was moving around the pitch well, but unfortunately he felt some discomfort and we are going to lose him.
"I haven't spoken to the doctor but I can confirm the injury is not the same as the one he had been carrying with his club."
