Former Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi has signed a short-term deal with Bolton, despite manager Neil Lennon revealing he was unlikely to land a contract just over a week ago.
Wanderers, currently propping up the Sky Bet Championship having failed to score in seven of their 12 league fixtures to date, ran the rule over Ameobi earlier this month, yet Lennon felt the 34-year-old was too alike to Emile Heskey and Gary Madine.
"We felt Shola was similar to Emile and Gary," Lennon said eight days ago.
"Although he did very, very good, finances are tight here so we want to make sure we're spending the money on the right player."
However, after the 1-0 home defeat to Birmingham on Tuesday, the Trotters' need for a striker became even more apparent as Heskey and Madine failed to fire having been paired together for the first time.
With Wellington Silva (hamstring) joining Zach Clough (shoulder) on the sidelines too, Lennon has moved to bring the former Newcastle forward on board ahead of the visit of Leeds this weekend.
