Jurgen Klopp has given a strong indication that Mamadou Sakho still has a future at Liverpool despite sending the defender home from the club's tour

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has indicated Mamadou Sakho still has a future at the club despite being sent home from the club's pre-season tour of the United States.

Klopp decided to take the action after the 26-year-old was late for the flight to California, a squad meal and missed a treatment session.

But the former Borussia Dortmund boss expects to resolve the situation with the Reds defender when the squad returns to Merseyside.

"He missed the departure of the plane, he missed a session and then was late for a meal," Klopp said.

"I have to build a group here, I have to start anew, so I thought it maybe made sense that he flew home to Liverpool and after eight days, when we come back, we can talk about it.

"But it's not that serious. It is how I said: we have some rules and we have to respect them. If somebody doesn't respect it, or somebody gives me the feeling he is not respecting it, then I have to react, that's all.

Klopp does not believe fining Sakho for his tardiness would be a worthwhile exercise.

"I am not interested in the money of the players," Klopp said.

"Not often in my life have I had to fine anybody, because I want that we learn together to do the right thing.

"Always it is the same with every group. I don't like fining."

Sakho is nursing an Achilles problem which will prevent him starting the new Premier League campaign. Liverpool's first game is at Arsenal on August 14.
