Alex Teixeira is unlikely to join Liverpool in this transfer window after they failed to agree a fee with Shakhtar Donetsk, Sky sources understand.
Shakhtar wanted at least £35m for a player they consider to be their last remaining valuable asset.
SSN HQ understands it is likely Teixeira will leave in the summer but no deal is in place with Liverpool or any other club at this stage.
Earlier this month, manager Mircea Lucescu said he would not stand in the way of the 26-year-old attacking midfielder leaving if the offer was right for the Ukrainian club.
But he told FourFourTwo this week: "He is worth €50m. He's incredible; very fast, with very good technique.
"I compare him with other players of the same age who changed a club. [Angel] Di Maria for example at Paris Saint-Germain.
"Teixeira can be at the same level, better even. He doesn't get injured, and every year he gets better and better."
Shakhtar have regrets over the £24m sale of Douglas Costa to Bayern Munich, deeming the value too cheap, and as a result were prepared to be stubborn with the Teixeira negotiations.
They are also mindful of winning back the Ukrainian title from Dynamo Kiev. The pair are level on points at the top of the table, with Teixeira a key part of the team.
