Ruud Gullit did not hold back when it came to assessing Louis van Gaal's reign as manager at Manchester United.

Van Gaal departed Old Trafford following two years at the club which saw Manchester United finish fourth and fifth in the Premier League respectively, while being knocked out at the group stage of this season's Champions League.

Gullit, 53, captained the Netherlands to European Championship glory in 1988, and also enjoyed back-to-back success with Milan in the European Cup in1989 and 1990.

"A lot of things were his own fault. You can't argue with the press all the time," Gullit said. "They have a certain opinion and you have to respect that. So if you argue all the time it doesn't help you.
