Victor Valdes returns to Manchester United from Standard Liege

Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes will return to Old Trafford after Standard Liege cancelled his loan deal.

Valdes has been an outcast at United following a bust-up with manager Louis van Gaal, and he joined the Belgian club in January.

The former Barcelona stopper had been due to stay with Liege for the remainder of the campaign, but has now left the club after playing just eight games.

Valdes is recovering from injury, and his departure has been confirmed by Standard Liege along with on loan Olympiakos midfielder Giannis Maniatis.

A statement from Liege read: "We want to give youngsters a chance in the upcoming games. Valdes is currently injured, so we decided to terminate the deal.

"As we decided to give more playing time to the youth players at the end of the season and because they couldn't be selected for medical reasons, the Spanish goalkeeper and the Greek midfielder have decided, in agreement with the club, to finish their loans at the end of this week.

"Standard Liege want to thank Giannis and Victor for everything they did for our club, especially during the successful campaign on the way to winning the Belgian Cup. We also wish them the best in the rest of their professional careers."

The 34-year-old won the Belgian Cup during his short spell but has not played since a 1-1 draw with Kortrijk on April 10.

Valdes joined United on a free transfer in January 2015 and made two appearances for the club at the end of last season.

The Catalan is out of contract in the summer but United do have the option to extend his deal for another 12 months.
