Middlesbrough are in talks with Aston Villa to sign goalkeeper Brad Guzan, according to Sky sources.
The 31-year-old is surplus to requirements at Villa, with only a year remaining on his contract.
Boro, who have already signed Victor Valdes to become their first-choice goalkeeper, want Guzan to battle Tomas Meijas and Dimi Konstantopolous as back-up.
Guzan should be signed in time for Saturday's friendly match at Aston Villa, which could see him make an instant return to former club.
Middlesbrough have already signed Viktor Fischer, Marten de Roon, Antonio Barragan, Alvaro Negredo, Gaston Ramirez and Bernardo Espinosa during the summer transfer window as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.
Guzan has made 170 first-team appearances for Aston Villa since his transfer to the club from Mexican team Chivas in August 2008.
He also has 50 international caps for the United States and was his national side's first-choice goalkeeper for the Copa America in June, in which they reached the semi-finals.
