England will play Iceland in the last 16 at Euro 2016 in Nice on Monday night after a dramatic finish in Group F.
Iceland scored a stoppage-time winner through Arnor Traustason to beat Austria 2-1 and snatch second spot from Portugal, who came from behind three times to draw 3-3 against Hungary.
Those results saw Hungary win the group, while Iceland finished second to book a meeting with Roy Hodgson's side in Nice on Monday at 8pm.
England were set to face Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, who knocked them out of successive tournaments in 2004 and 2006, until Traustason's late winner.
Iceland, ranked 34th in the world by FIFA, are the smallest ever nation to qualify for the European Championship finals with a population of 330,000.
Should England progress the possibility of a clash with hosts France in the quarter-finals remains.
Only two senior friendlies have ever been played between England and Iceland, with the first meeting a 1-1 draw in Reykjavik in 1982, while the Three Lions emerged 6-1 winners in 2004 with current captain Wayne Rooney playing and scoring twice.
Iceland coach Lars Lagerback enjoyed a fine record against England as Sweden boss and said he was keen to see that continue, but does think their next opponents are favourites to win the game.
"Any team you get now I suppose will be very tough for us," Lagerback said. "Playing England is rather nice, I never lost against them with Sweden and I think we played five or six times or something, so let's hope we can stick to that.
"The best thing with ending second is that we get four rest days and we can re-load and hopefully we can go out and put some questions to the England team even if, of course, I think they are the favourite."
Iceland's Kari Arnason, man of the match in the 2-1 win over Austria, counts Plymouth, Aberdeen and Rotherham among his former clubs and said he had previously cheered the Three Lions at major competitions.
"I've always supported England in big international tournaments, it's a dream come true," he said. "We're going to go into the game fully focused, we're going in to get a result. We believe in our ability."
