So how will they line up?

Sky Bet's odds on who will start the opening game suggest that Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge, who has not represented his country in over a year, is more likely to lead the line than Kane, despite the Tottenham striker starting England's last two games.

They also rate Cahill and Smalling as Hodgson's best centre-back pairing, while doubting Shaw's chances of being fit in time with odds of 14/1 against his name.

In midfield, both Milner and Henderson have shorter odds than Barkley's despite the Everton man's impressive form, while Wilshere (2/1), Lallana (10/1) and Oxlade-Chamberlain (12/1) also miss out.

Captain and all-time leading scorer Rooney is expected to be recalled as the second shortest priced player to start, with only Hart seemingly more certain of place in Hodgson's Euro 2016 opening XI.
