Midfielder unhappy with new contract on offer at Hereford

Hereford United midfielder Ben Smith is training with Cheltenham Town as he considers his future. Smith has been offered a new deal by Hereford, but is unhappy about having to take a significant pay cut in order to stay at Edgar Street. He has been invited to train with League Two rivals Cheltenham and could feature in Friday's pre-season friendly against Bishop's Cleeve. The 30-year-old was wanted by Cheltenham during John Ward's time in charge and current boss Martin Allen is keen to have a look at Smith. "Ben has been offered a new contract by Hereford, but he is not happy with it, so we will have a look at him," Allen told the Gloucestershire Echo. "We already have two good central midfield players in David Bird and Andrew Gallinagh, but Ben is more of an attacking player and is very good going forward. He would also give me the option of playing a three."
