Whittingham and McCormack goals seal points

Cardiff moved to third in the Championship table after beating Blackpool with two late goals at Ninian Park. Peter Whittingham and Ross McCormack scored on 83 minutes and 86 minutes respectively to seal the win. With both sides looking to build on solid recent runs, the Bluebirds looked the more promising early on but they failed to break the deadlock from decent chances for Gavin Rae, Stephen McPhail and McCormack. The Seasiders improved as the half progressed with Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Ben Burgess drawing decent saves from Cardiff goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Both side's struggled to carve out decent chances after the break but Cardiff won thanks to Whittingham's header and McCormack's free-kick. The Bluebirds were boosted by defender Darren Purse overcoming a knock which forced him off at half-time in Saturday's 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest. The visitors were less fortunate with on-loan Watford striker Steve Kabba failing to shake off an ankle injury, while fellow frontman Steve McPhee remained sidelined with a calf problem. Rae was the first player to get a shot on target as he forced Blackpool goalkeeper Paul Rachubka into parrying the ball away. Jay Bothroyd then got a shot away from the edge of Blackpool's area but Rob Edwards was able to block the striker's effort.

Bluebirds press

Cardiff continued to press with Paul Parry looking dangerous on the wing but he failed to hit the target with an effort from just outside of the area. A Parry corner then fell to McPhail in the area but the midfielder's strike went harmlessly wide. The Seasiders started to look more lively as the half-hour mark approached with Burgess seeing his shot blocked by Purse and Taylor-Fletcher striking wide. Cardiff goalkeeper Heaton then punched away another effort from Taylor-Fletcher before Danny Coid fired an effort over Heaton's crossbar. A cross from Coid found Burgess seven minutes before the break but Heaton was equal to the Blackpool striker's header. The best chance of the first half came in the 41st minute as Rachubka produced a superb save to deny McCormack's close-range strike. In a quiet start to the second half, Keith Southern struck harmlessly wide while at the other end Whittingham also failed to hit the target shortly after coming off the bench. Bothroyd could not test Rachubka with his strike before McPhail did better on the hour mark as the Seasiders goalkeeper was forced into pushing his strike away.
Full stretch
Heaton was then at full stretch to stop the visitors from going ahead against the run of play as he tipped Taylor-Fletcher's strike over the bar. Cardiff finally took their chance in the 83rd minute when Bothroyd supplied Whittingham to head home from close range. And they secured the points with four minutes remaining when McCormack found the net with his free-kick from the edge of the area. The victory extends Cardiff's unbeaten run to six and puts an end to Blackpool seven games without defeat.
