High-flying Robins' run ended by Barnsley

Bristol City remain inside the Championship play-off positions despite being held to a goalless draw against lowly Barnsley at Oakwell. The Tykes created the better opportunities with Iain Hume and Jon Macken failing to find the back from one-on-one situations. Jamal Campbell-Ryce was the closest to breaking the deadlock in south Yorkshire, but the winger's effort struck the crossbar. Both teams looked to keep the ball on the ground on a windy day, although it was a more direct route that almost brought the first goal after seven minutes. A weak clearance from the home defence fell to Gavin Williams who struck a first-time shot from 35 yards which caught Heinz Muller flat-footed, the German goalkeeper only spared his blushes when the ball flashed into the side-netting.

Well blocked

Barnsley should have taken the lead four minutes later when Anderson da Silva stole the ball in midfield before laying off a pass to Hume who saw his shot well blocked by Adriano Basso, who was quickly off his line. From there the opening period became a cagey affair with both sides cautiously passing the ball around without posing a threat. Barnsley were running with the wind at their backs in the second half and they soon sprang into life forcing Basso to handle a back pass on the point of the six-yard box. From the free-kick Campbell-Ryce blasted a shot through the four-man wall which ricocheted onto the crossbar before falling to Macken whose shot at the back-post was brilliantly blocked. Macken spurned an even better chance a minute later after Da Silva again stole the ball in midfield before playing in the Irish striker who slid his shot wide.
Outplayed
City were being outplayed by their hosts and their boss, Gary Johnson, sought to inject some invention into his flagging team replacing strike duo Lee Trundle and Dele Adebola with Nicky Maynard and debutant John. It worked in so far as City settled after their inclusions with Marvin Elliott shooting over the crossbar while a dangerous cross from Maynard was allowed to pass harmlessly across goal. Barnsley replied with the impressive Da Silva shooting narrowly wide following a corner. The home side pushed forward in the closing stages, with Rob Kozluk booked for a dive in the area in injury time, as the game stayed goalless.
