Steve Smith targeting Ashes win in England in 2019 after securing a 4-0 series win at the SCG

Steve Smith has targeted Australia's first Ashes win in England since 2001 after his side secured a 4-0 series victory in Sydney.

The hosts put the seal on a dominant series win by beating England by an innings and 123 runs on day five at the SCG, but attention has already turned to the next time these two sides lock horns in 2019.

And it's a series the Australian captain is already looking forward as he looks to tick an Ashes win in England off his bucket list.

"This team has been magnificent in this series," he said. "The cricket we've played has been great so the more we play together, the more we're going to get better as a group. We've just got to keep getting better and improving as a team.

"England in 2019 is a long way away but it is a real challenge for us as well. It's a bucket list of mine to win an Ashes series in England."

England have won the last four series on home soil with Australia last tasting Ashes success away from home with a 4-1 victory just under 17 years ago under the leadership of Steve Waugh.

When asked if he thinks his side are the favourties to end that run retain the Ashes in 2019, Smith said: "I have no idea."

Smith, meanwhile, could reflect with huge satisfaction on a series he has helped to dominate with his prolific haul of 687 runs at an average of 137.40.

His performances helped him pick up two man of the match awards in the series, the Compton-Miller Medal and the player of the series, awards the 28-year-old is proud of.

"I just love being out in the middle, doing the job and trying to lead from the front for my team," he said. "I work very hard in the nets and I like to hit a lot of balls.

"My mind's probably in as good a space as it's been with my batting at the moment. I'm making good decisions consistently and that's part of batting.

"I'm really proud of the way I've played throughout this series and being able to lead from the front."

Finally, Smith said belief, each player knowing their roles and a home crowd were behind his side's Ashes success.

"It's been a great couple of months," he said. "The cricket we've played has been outstanding.

"All the guys have been there and done the job with the wickets being shared around. And obviously scoring big runs in the first innings has been key for us. The batters have stood up and got through difficult periods, winning the key moments which has been crucial in this series."

He added: "I think England had their foot in the door in all of the Test matches, they've played some exceptional cricket and we've just been able to get on top in those key moments and not let them back in the game which has been crucial."
