Liam Smith is considering an offer to take on Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, according to his promoter.
Britain's super-welterweight world champion made a successful first defence of his WBO belt in December, a month after Alvarez beat Miguel Cotto to claim the vacant WBC middleweight title.
Gennady Golovkin wants a unification fight with Alvarez, but weight could be an issue as 'Canelo' took on Cotto at a catchweight of 155lbs and Golovkin's camp has previously ruled out fighting at anything below the 160lbs limit.
Now Smith's name has entered the reckoning, with promoter Frank Warren revealing the option is there for a meeting with one of boxing's biggest draws.
"We're contemplating an offer from Alvarez," said Warren, who did not say which man's world title would be on offer. "We're looking at that, we'll think about it and see where we go."
He told BoxNation: "We'll see, I'm not going to get in too much detail - it's a big fight for Liam and there's other big fights out there for him. We're looking at it."
